Scenic Biking Routes in San Diego

With its great climate and scenic destinations, San Diego is a cyclist’s paradise. Whether one is biking for leisure or for sport or training, a biker will never run out of great routes to ride through when in San Diego, California.
The San Diego Tourism Authority’s official website featured the Mission Bay Path as one of the best biking routes in the whole county.
“Mission Bay comprises 4,200 acres in roughly equal parts of land and water, surrounded by 27 miles of meandering shoreline of sandy beaches. Interconnected by a network of waterways, inlets and islets, the bay is best traveled by boat. But if you don’t have a boat and would rather stay dry, biking along easy going pedestrian and bicycle paths is the next best way to explore. A San Diego County Bicycle Coalition’s recommended route incorporates almost 12 miles of flat, scenic bike paths along most of the interior of the bay. With the exception of a few short sections, the route is vehicle free.”

San Diego is such a bike-friendly destination that San Diego Magazine, in fact has named close to 30 biking routes that any cycling enthusiast will enjoy.
One of the routes mentioned is the 11.2-mile El Capitan cycling route, which the magazine also described as one of the most difficult paths to tread on a bike when in San Diego, CA.
“El Capitan Preserve. The trailhead is on the right side of Wildcat Canyon Road. This trail is hot, dusty, and steep, but the views are worth it. The trail to the top goes down as well as up and up and up, making this climb one of the few that actually is “uphill both ways.” Warning: The trail descends before the final ascent to the summit. Don’t turn back too soon. If—when!—you make it to the top, you are treated to a 360-degree view of San Diego and the satisfaction of knowing you really earned it.”

The San Diego Union Tribune also came up with its own list of bike paths that will wow any biker.
One of the paths mentioned by the San Diego Union Tribune is the Sail Bay Path.
“Where is it? Sail Bay is accessible via the Mission Boulevard or Ingraham Street bridges. What it’s like: The area has wide sidewalks, lovely views and cool breezes. There’s less of a crowd than on the oceanfront boardwalk (which means fewer people to accidentally bump into). Sail Bay is U-shaped with many entry points, so you can start from anywhere and ride as long or as little as you like. Parking: Street spots in that area are very difficult to find, especially on weekends. There are some near the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, but your best bet is to try along the more residential Ingraham Street entrance.”
